Effective Christian Leadership Requires a Strong Foundation

Foundational Church Leaders

Part of our calling as church leaders, ministry leaders, or businesses leaders is to build our lives on a solid foundation.  Everything that is seen outwardly is the result of something that began inwardly.  In order to be good examples and leaders, we need to cultivate that inward work.

Cultivating Christian Leadership

You have probably used the phrase, “Jesus is my Lord and Savior”.

We all have.

But, are you leading your life as one who has clearly positioned Jesus as the Lord of your life?  Would people outside your church walls be surprised to find out that you are a Christian?

It’s easy for most Christians to understand Jesus as Savior…that Jesus Christ alone can save people from their sins.

But, to make the statement that Jesus is the Lord of my Life, well, that is much more challenging.

In Luke 6:46, Jesus asks his disciples, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?

OUCH!  Jesus takes this title of LORD seriously.

Jesus goes on in Luke 6:47-48 and tells us these words and practices are foundational. Living a life in Christ is like building your house on a strong foundation.

Being a Light No Matter Where We Are Positioned

This should be true in our lives, ministries, businesses, and especially in our relationships with others. As Christian leaders, businessmen, and disciples we need to let our light shine in all we do, at work, at the gym, with our kids at hockey games, or eating dinner together in a restaurant…living out our everyday lives as if Jesus is both Lord and Savior.

For me, starting each day by spending time with our Heavenly Father always has a positive effect on my day. Whether reading scripture, daily devotionals, or spending time in prayer and meditation, it makes a big difference in my day. It humbles me and reminds me to look at people as souls, and to disregard outward appearances. It grounds me, and reminds me that all I do, I do for Him.

Inspiring Examples

There are many great books and resources on leading like Jesus. One of my favorite Christian leaders is Ken Blanchard. Ken is the Chief Spiritual Officer of the Ken Blanchard Companies – a global leader in workplace learning, employee productivity, leadership and team effectiveness. Ken is also an amazing speaker, and I would encourage you to visit his website to learn more. http://www.leadlikejesus.com/.

How have you been able to carry the love of Christ out into the world, and let your light shine through your work with others, in your business, or in your community?

  1. This line is the real test isn’t it – “Would people outside your church walls be surprised to find out that you are a Christian?” Thanks for the reminder to be salt and light.
