Successful media production revolves around two main factors; communication and listening. If you can capitalize on both then you are well on your way to reaching a mass audience.
Before you start reaching out to an audience you must first recognize the types of listening styles they may have, and be able to connect with each of them. There are 5 main types of listening styles:
An appreciative audience finds true joy out of what they are listening or viewing, it may even be second nature to them as to why they enjoy it
An empathetic audience gains interest in a program simply based on the emotional chord it strikes with them. They gather increased attention from emotional grief, happiness, and/or passion.
The discerning audience is one of the most analytical of the bunch. They tend to seek information, gather it and take notes. They collect segments of information and save it for use at another time.
The comprehensive audience is similar to the discerning audience. This audience does not only gather segments of information, but it organizes it and makes use of it. Comprehensive listeners piece together information and understand it.
This type of audience will either be your most outspoken advocates, or your most outspoken critics. If your message is slightly differential to theirs, be sure to hear from them and be ready to combat their challenge. They tend to show more selective listening characteristics than the others.
Some of us are more prone to one type of listening style than others. But the truth is we all exhibit these listening styles at one point in time or another. It just depends on environment and the message being delivered. To effectively communicate your brands you must accommodate each of these listening styles, and consider how you can adapt your message to reach each type of listener.

- Do Your Homework
Find out exactly who you are directing your message toward. Who will be your target audience and what are their preferences and trends? Do your homework, and communicate this information with them. By doing so, the audience will sense your interest.
- What Do People Think Of When They Think Of You?
Come to a deep understanding of your organization’s core values and the personality traits which reflect your image the most. Communicate a few specific, but simple points.
- Communicate Brand Excellence
Show your audience why you are relevant, what it is you have in common, and how you are helping them reach their individual goals. Be honest instead of forcing your message upon them. Be consistent with your message, construct a promise, and deliver.
- Address Your Critics
Evaluative audiences can be very critical at times. Be on guard and ready for this challenge. Do not be afraid to recognize where you must improve. Be ready to address your challenges, and discuss how you are working to overcome them.
- Deliver With Power
Be enthusiastic, be happy, take your time, connect your core values with theirs, and follow up.
Appealing to the listening styles for every audience is never easy. But these tips are the strategic insights you may need to keep your audience engaged, listening, and united with your unique media production.
